I vividly remember the first time my mom applied henna to my hands. As soon as the paste touched my skin, the aroma filled the room and my senses. It's a delicate, sweet, and uniquely pleasing fragrance that’s hard to forget.
Henna comes from the leaves of a hardy, wiry plant that grows in the wild. The plant’s tiny leaves are carefully picked from its thorny branches, a task requiring both patience and skill. Once collected, the leaves are dried in the sun, ground into a fine powder, and stored until ready to be used.
Preparing henna paste is an art in itself, often done a few days before a special occasion. I’ll share more about the preparation process in a future post.
These days, store-bought henna cones are widely available. However, they are typically processed and may contain preservatives, unlike the pure, natural henna made from scratch.
I’ll soon share some pictures of the henna tree from my grandmother’s yard. I just hope they don’t cut it down before I get the chance!
